That\u2019s what happened recently when a lost piece of Jacob Dinezon\u2019s writing was located in an old Yiddish newspaper available via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/discover\/newspapers\/jpress\">Historical Jewish Press<\/a> project, an initiative of the National Library of Israel in partnership with Tel Aviv University.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My first encounter with this extraordinary resource was in obtaining information about Dinezon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/hyt\/1919\/09\/02\/01\/article\/24\">death<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/hyt\/1919\/09\/01\/01\/article\/15\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">funeral<\/a> in the Warsaw Yiddish newspaper,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/hyt?&amp;e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\"><em>Haynt\u00a0<\/em>(<em>Today<\/em>)<\/a>.\u00a0Most of these reports, which were translated into English by Tina Lunson and are now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobdinezon.com\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online,<\/a>\u00a0were published in late August and early September of 1919.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96608\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/hyt\/1919\/08\/31\/01\/page\/3\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96608 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/500-Dinezon-Death-Annoucement-Haynt-08-31-1919.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/500-Dinezon-Death-Annoucement-Haynt-08-31-1919.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/500-Dinezon-Death-Annoucement-Haynt-08-31-1919-300x275.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/hyt\/1919\/08\/31\/01\/page\/3\">Full page death announcement for Jacob Dinezon, published in the August 31, 1919 issue of <em>Haynt<\/em>.<\/a> From the National Library of Israel Digital Collection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This latest discovery was motivated by the Yiddish translator Mindy Liberman who recently completed the first English translation of Jacob Dinezon\u2019s novella, <em>Falik un zayn hoyz<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Falik and His House<\/em>), which was initially published in fifteen installments in the Yiddish newspaper,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/dfr?&amp;e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\"><em>Der fraynd<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Friend<\/em>)<\/a>, in 1904. These installments were subsequently republished by Akhisefer in Warsaw, Poland, as part of a collection of volumes celebrating Dinezon\u2019s 10th\u00a0<em>yortsayt<\/em>\u00a0(the 10th anniversary of his death) in 1929. From the National Library of Israel Digital Collection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I first met Mindy at a meeting of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/yiddishinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language<\/a>\u00a0in December 2019, during a commemoration of Dinezon\u2019s 100th\u00a0<em>yortsayt.<\/em>\u00a0After my talk, Mindy approached me and mentioned that she had been translating poems by the Yiddish poet Miriam Ulinover, was enjoying the process, and was interested in continuing her translation efforts with a work of fiction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At that time, I told her that I was about to take a break from the Dinezon work but that there was one short Dinezon novel,\u00a0<em>Falik un zayn hoyz<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Falik and His House<\/em>), which had always intrigued me. From what I had read, the plot was most unusual. The story focuses on an old tailor, Falik, whose sons have moved from Eastern Europe to America. The sons want their parents to join them, but Falik, even though his house is falling down around him, doesn\u2019t want to leave the Old Country. According to the Yiddish literary historian Shmuel Rozshanski, \u201cDinezon was possibly the first of the Yiddish writers in Russia to describe this type of Jew who doesn\u2019t want to leave his old home even though he endlessly suffers in it.\u201d (Translation by Miri Koral)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mindy and I exchanged email addresses, and a short time later, I sent her a link to an online version of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/nybc202789\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Falik un zayn hoyz<\/em><\/a>\u00a0made available by the Yiddish Book Center\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yiddishbookcenter.org\/collections\/digital-yiddish-library\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When Mindy read the Yiddish book, she discovered something startling: the final few pages of the story were missing!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instead of the end of the story, this notice from the publisher appeared:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96593\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/books\/NNL_ALEPH002128404\/NLI\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96593 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Falik-in-zayn-hoyz-dertsehlung-from-the-publisher.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Falik-in-zayn-hoyz-dertsehlung-from-the-publisher.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Falik-in-zayn-hoyz-dertsehlung-from-the-publisher-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Publisher&#8217;s note at the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/books\/NNL_ALEPH002128404\/NLI\"><em>Falik in zayn hoyz<\/em><\/a>. He prepared the proofs himself.<\/p>\n<p>The story was typeset until the last page, but he did not manage to set the type for the last few lines of the proof sheet.<\/p>\n<p>We present it as it was left at the hand of the deceased author.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The novella was published without the ending!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I couldn\u2019t believe that Dinezon hadn\u2019t written an ending to his story. Certainly,\u00a0<em>Der fraynd<\/em>\u00a0wouldn\u2019t have published fifteen installments without the final words. Why didn\u2019t they just go back to the original newspaper to find the ending?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then it occurred to me, the original newspapers were published twenty-five years earlier. At that time, finding an archive of\u00a0<em>Der fraynd,<\/em>\u00a0which stopped publishing in 1913, was probably impossible. So\u00a0<em>Falik\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0publishers did the best they could and printed what they had.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today we have resources they couldn\u2019t have even imagined back then, including the aforementioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/discover\/newspapers\/jpress\">Historical Jewish Press<\/a>! So I headed online to see if they had issues of <em>Der fraynd<\/em>\u00a0and was delighted to find that they had digital images of the entire run of the newspaper!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now, at this point, I have to admit, there was still a problem: I don\u2019t read Yiddish.\u00a0I\u2019ve always had to hire Yiddish translators to read any of Dinezon\u2019s books or the research materials related to his life and times. So I knew there was no way I could read the bold Yiddish headlines on my own. But I did have an image of the title from the book, so in effect, like a computer, I basically relied on image recognition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96605\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Computer-and-Book-Title.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-96605\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Computer-and-Book-Title.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Computer-and-Book-Title.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Computer-and-Book-Title-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Computer-and-Book-Title-909x600.jpg 909w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Computer-and-Book-Title-768x507.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By matching the name of the work to that which appeared in the digitized issues of <em>Der Fraynd<\/em>, the author was able to locate the long-lost conclusion to Dinezon&#8217;s story<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Starting with Friday, January 1st, 1904, I began scanning through the newspaper, day-by-day and page-by-page.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first appearance of\u00a0<em>Falik un zayn hoyz<\/em>\u00a0showed up on January 17th. The page was damaged, and the installment number was missing. But as hard as I tried, I couldn\u2019t find the missing part. I went back again through the whole lot without success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Part 15 was missing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Was it possible that Dinezon had never finished the story or that for some reason, the newspaper had never published the final installment? Frustrated and exhausted, I said, \u201cTo hell with it!\u201d and went to bed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Getting up the next morning, I just couldn\u2019t let it rest. It just didn\u2019t make sense. How could Dinezon not finish his story, and how could\u00a0<em>Der fraynd<\/em>\u00a0not publish it after promising the installment was forthcoming? It had to be there somewhere!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So I went back and downloaded twenty-five full-page PDF copies of the newspaper starting from the day after the appearance of Part 14. This way, I could scan through each day in a much more precise manner on my large computer screen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And that\u2019s how I found it! At the very bottom of page two on June 1st: Part 15 of\u00a0<em>Falik and His House<\/em>! On April 16th, 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishstorytellerpress.com\/\">Jewish Storyteller Press<\/a> published Dinezon\u2019s novella in its entirety for the very first time in English.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u2019s one more thing that was confirmed by scanning through all those online newspapers. It has always been my contention that Jacob Dinezon deserves equal recognition alongside the other prominent Yiddish writers of his day. For Dinezon, 1904 was a banner year. <em>Der fraynd<\/em> published two of his novellas and several of his short stories. Dinezon\u2019s works appeared side-by-side with the works of Sholem Aleichem, I. L. Peretz, Mendele Mocher Sforim, and S. Ansky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At that moment in time, Dinezon was easily as well-known and popular as his now more famous colleagues and friends.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8212;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>A version of this article originally appeared<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobdinezon.com\/\">Jacob Dinezon: Beloved Uncle of Modern Yiddish Literature<\/a><em>\u00a0under the headline &#8220;A Research Discovery&#8221;.
