{"id":93729,"date":"2021-03-14T12:29:02","date_gmt":"2021-03-14T10:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/?p=93729"},"modified":"2021-06-09T12:16:57","modified_gmt":"2021-06-09T09:16:57","slug":"hoi_bengurion_agnon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/en\/hoi_bengurion_agnon\/","title":{"rendered":"David Ben-Gurion, the Iconoclast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On February 18<sup>th<\/sup>, 1970, Israel&#8217;s President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Rabbi and Supreme Court judges all came to pay their last respects to the esteemed writer, Shmuel Yosef Agnon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">David Ben-Gurion, by then a former prime minister, also attended the funeral. Unlike the rest of the attendees and contrary to what was customary at Jewish funerals, Ben-Gurion decided not to wear a head covering \u2013 a kippah (yarmulke) or any form of hat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60979\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60979\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60979 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/05935-000-19-500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/05935-000-19-500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/05935-000-19-500-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/05935-000-19-500-366x600.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60979\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ben-Gurion at Agnon&#8217;s funeral, wearing no head covering. Porush, one of the leaders of the ultra-Orthodox political party, Agudat Yisrael, decided to act and approached Ben-Gurion; he figured the iconic Israeli statesman had simply forgotten to bring a head covering and offered him one. To his astonishment, Porush learned this was no mistake \u2013 Ben-Gurion had intentionally left his head bare. &#8220;I have a hat with me,&#8221; Ben-Gurion said, &#8220;but I will not wear it in light of the government&#8217;s decision to force religion with regard to the question of who is a Jew.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Footage of S.Y. Agnon&#8217;s Funeral, 1970:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"\u05d4\u05dc\u05d5\u05d5\u05d9\u05d9\u05ea\u05d5 \u05e9\u05dc \u05e9&quot;\u05d9 \u05e2\u05d2\u05e0\u05d5\u05df\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fh1OEoC528g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ben-Gurion was referring to an amendment to Israel&#8217;s well known Law of Return, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/mar\/1970\/02\/11\/01\/article\/31\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">which carried in the first reading at the Knesset a few days earlier<\/a> and stated for the first time in the history of law in the State of Israel an answer to the longstanding question: Who is a Jew? Agnon Archive at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking of Ben-Gurion and Agnon, the latter was one of several intellectuals and religious leaders of whom in 1958 Ben-Gurion himself asked to answer the question: Who is a Jew? Agnon replied in a letter that the answer could be found in the &#8220;Shulchan Aruch,&#8221;, a 16<sup>th<\/sup> century book of Jewish law, but added that &#8220;religion and state at this time are like two neighbors who are not comfortable with each other. Had he changed his mind and decided to honor Rabbi Porush and the ceremony? Not in the least.
