The Jewish calendar, after all, predates Pope Gregory XIII\u2019s calculation by some four millennia, and the region functioned for centuries under the Ottoman Empire\u2019s <em>rumi<\/em>\u00a0calendar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nonetheless, the Gregorian calendar was adopted for civil use with the British conquest of the Ottoman Empire, on March 1, 1917, and the beginning of the year reset to January 1 in 1918.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the first decade of the British Mandate, the local Orthodox Christian population marked the new year according to the Julian calendar in mid-January, Muslims celebrated the new year in summer, and the Jewish population honored Rosh Hashana in early fall.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89700\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-89700\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2-300x132.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2-970x428.jpg 970w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2-768x339.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2-1536x678.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/party_and_anti-party_2.jpg 1632w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Establishments like Haifa\u2019s Caf\u00e9 Vienna promised dancing till dawn on New Year\u2019s Eve. The National Library of Israel collections<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">British Army soldiers stationed in the region had their big blow-outs at Christmas (see\u00a0<em>\u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/biscuits-bully-beef-and-beer-holy-land-christmas-1917-48\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biscuits, bully beef and beer<\/a>\u201d<em>),\u00a0<\/em>but by the mid-1920s, with British officialdom firmly in place, New Year\u2019s Eve celebrations were organized.
