{"id":44512,"date":"2019-04-03T13:55:49","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T10:55:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/?p=44512"},"modified":"2024-02-06T16:26:57","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T14:26:57","slug":"herzl-postcards-daughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/en\/herzl-postcards-daughter\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beautiful Postcards Theodor Herzl Sent to His Daughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On October 12<sup>th<\/sup>, 1898, the visionary of the State, Binyamin Ze\u2019ev (Theodor) Herzl, embarked on a journey to the Land of Israel in order to advance his great dream- a Jewish state for the Jewish People.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Throughout his journey, Herzl sent regular postcards and letters to his family. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/archives\/NNL_ARCHIVE_AL003541600\/NLI\">The one-of-a-kind collection of correspondence<\/a> is housed at the National Library of Israel. The collection features brief greetings, written on postcards, sent to his eight-year-old daughter Paulina, from various stops along the journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The inscriptions on each of the postcards are brief, containing one or two sentences in Herzl&#8217;s handwriting. But the poignant words shed light on Herzl&#8217;s great love for his daughter and his desire to update her on the progress of his trip and reassure her that everything was fine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first postcard in the series was sent from Constantinople, soon to become Istanbul. The postcard is dated October 15<sup>th<\/sup>, 1898:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Tender kisses to my delicate daughter Paulina from her faithful Papa&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/15oct1898-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44018\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/15oct1898-1.jpg\" alt=\"\u05d4\u05e8\u05e6\u05dc\" width=\"500\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/15oct1898-1.jpg 1263w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/15oct1898-1-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/15oct1898-1-768x488.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/15oct1898-1-944x600.jpg 944w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Herzl had timed his journey to the Holy Land to coincide with a visit by the German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Zionist visionary hoped to discuss the particulars of a future Jewish homeland with the Kaiser. On the same day on which he sent the above postcard, Herzl wrote the following in his personal journal:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>I have discussed the conditions we should put forth with Bodenheimer [a member of the delegation which accompanied Herzl]. The border of the region: from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates. To stipulate a transitional period with independent institutions. A Jewish governor for the transitional period. When the (Jewish) population in a certain area reaches two-thirds of the total population, the administration, from a political standpoint, will become a Jewish administration<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Five days later, on October 20<sup>th<\/sup>, Herzl wrote to his daughter from Smyrna, the Turkish port city of Izmir:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Many tender kisses from Asia Minor to my good daughter Paulina, from her faithful Papa&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20oct1898-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44020\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20oct1898-1.jpg\" alt=\"\u05d4\u05e8\u05e6\u05dc\" width=\"500\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20oct1898-1.jpg 1278w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20oct1898-1-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20oct1898-1-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/20oct1898-1-916x600.jpg 916w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Herzl, already in Athens the very next day, wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Tender kisses from Greece to my delicate daughter Paulina from her faithful Papa&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44036\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/athens.jpg\" alt=\"\u05d4\u05e8\u05e6\u05dc\" width=\"500\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/athens.jpg 492w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/athens-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The journey stretched on, and on October 29<sup>th<\/sup>, reached its climax &#8211; the meeting with Kaiser Wilhelm II at Mikveh Yisrael in Jerusalem. Herzl hoped that, with his help, he might receive a special charter for the establishment of a Jewish state from the Turkish Sultan. A cameraman from Herzl&#8217;s delegation was supposed to capture the historic moment, but the amateur photographer missed the photo-op to Herzl\u2019s great disappointment&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next day Herzl wrote again to Paulina, this time in a postcard celebrating his meeting with the Kaiser:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>&#8220;To my good Paulina, tender kisses are sent to you from your faithful Papa in Jerusalem&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/30oct1898-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44022\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/30oct1898-1.jpg\" alt=\"\u05d4\u05e8\u05e6\u05dc\" width=\"500\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/30oct1898-1.jpg 1266w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/30oct1898-1-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/30oct1898-1-768x485.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/30oct1898-1-951x600.jpg 951w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next day, Herzl sent yet another postcard, this time with a picture of Hebron, on which he wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>&#8220;Kisses from your faithful Papa<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44012\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/31oct1898-1.jpg\" alt=\"\u05d4\u05e8\u05e6\u05dc\" width=\"500\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/31oct1898-1.jpg 1266w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/31oct1898-1-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/31oct1898-1-768x491.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/31oct1898-1-939x600.jpg 939w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>If I remember you in the future, Jerusalem, not with pleasure will I remember you,<\/em>&#8221; Herzl wrote in his journal on October 31<sup>st<\/sup>, &#8220;<em>The moldy residues of two thousand years of cruelty, intolerance, and filth lie in the stinking streets. If we ever get Jerusalem, and if it is within my ability, I will clean it first. I shall remove everything that is not sacred, I shall set up housing for laborers outside of the city, I shalI empty out the nests of filth, destroy them, burn those ruins which are not \u00a0sacred, and the bazaars I shall move to another place. Preserving the old building style as much as possible, I will erect a modern, convenient, clean and functioning city around the holy sites.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
