Then there are archives arranged after death by devoted family members. In these cases, even if the order is imperfect, there is at least a clear starting point. And then there are the truly bewildering archives: those in which each page seems capable of standing alone, or perhaps belonging to some other group of so-far unknown documents. In these cases, any sense of order or chronological continuity is tenuous at best.

The archive of Moshe Tzinovitz belongs to this last category.

Part of the reason may lie with Tzinovitz himself — a man of encyclopedic knowledge of Eastern European Jewish communities and their rabbis, who filled nearly every sheet of paper to the margins. By his own hand, he preserved the stories of dozens of figures and communities from a world that was later destroyed in the Holocaust.

To understand how he came to do this, it is worth beginning with his background.

Moshe Aryeh Tzinovitz was born in Jedwabne in Poland during the Passover holiday of 1907. Like many of his generation, he lived at the intersection between Religious Zionism and the ultra-Orthodox camp that opposed it. He studied in a modernized heder and at the Tachkemoni school in Krakow, both associated with Religious Zionism, and later in the prestigious yeshiva schools of Lomza and Mir. Technically, Zionist activity was forbidden in those institutions, yet he continued his involvement quietly. In time, he participated in the 14th Zionist Congress and was responsible for establishing several branches of the Mizrachi movement in Germany.

Moshe Tzinovitz

Already then, he began publishing articles on rabbinic and historical subjects, primarily in the Vilna newspaper Das Wort. These books typically included the history of the community, biographical sketches of prominent figures, and chapters devoted to other elements survivors felt compelled to preserve. As a recognized authority on Eastern European Jewish communities, and already known for his newspaper essays, Tzinovitz was frequently approached for help in locating information and composing these works.

As a result, Moshe Tzinovitz contributed not only dozens of articles and biographies to such memorial books, but at times also undertook the unseen labor of editing and drafting them in their entirety. He himself wrote that “I published studies and notes… in approximately fifty memorial books, to say the least, such as in the memorial books of the communities of Iwje, Ostrołęka, Augustów, Eišiškės, Amdur…” The alphabetical list continues at such length that it nearly fills the page on which he recorded it. In later years, he spoke of plans for books such as: A Register of Yeshivot, or The Changing of the Guard — on the development of Jewish communal life in Germany, a book of customs and traditions, a Talmudic quiz, a collection of speeches and educational addresses, and Yeshiva Students Between the Wars, on Lithuanian Torah scholars in the interwar period. None of these works was published, and it is difficult to link any surviving manuscripts directly to those titles. Yet the substance of them exists — scattered across drafts, notebooks, and bundles of pages grouped under broad subject headings.

I am inclined to believe that Tzinovitz gathered nearly all the material he needed, but never had the time to shape it fully into the books he envisioned. He was perpetually called upon to provide his knowledge to others, to communities that relied on his expertise to preserve their past in memorial volumes.

The archive of Moshe Tzinovitz has now been cataloged. On a personal note, working through it was often frustrating, requiring me to map, even if only partially, the scope of his literary output. I counted more than 700 articles published across dozens of books and newspapers. And yet, even that number does not begin to reflect the vast quantity of information he accumulated in his notes.

It is my hope that, despite the disorder in which Tzinovitz left his papers, others will open his files, sift patiently through the pages, and discover the invaluable knowledge he preserved, knowledge he did not live to see fully brought to light.

Moshe Tzinovitz filled page after page with the stories of rabbis and communities that no longer exist.
