Rosen and his sister Fredda grew up in Akron with Resnik and her brother Charles. She was even the best typist,\u201d Fredda Rosen said. \u201cShe was very quiet and studious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The honoree was back in town for Judith Resnik Day, celebrating her as an astronaut who\u2019d just returned from a week-long space mission aboard the shuttle<em> Discovery <\/em>on its maiden voyage. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/austjewishtimes\/1984\/09\/06\/01\/page\/1\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7CtxTI--------------1\">the September 6, 1984 edition of <em>The Australian Jewish Times<\/em><\/a>, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA\u2019s biographical page for Resnik states that on the mission, she logged 144 hours and 57 minutes in space and completed 96 orbits of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his 2006 book <em>Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut<\/em>, Mike Mullane, one of six people aboard <em>Discovery<\/em>, said he was \u201chappy to be crewed with Judy,\u201d calling her \u201csmart, hardworking, and dependable, all the things you would want in a fellow crewmember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <em>Challenger<\/em>, Resnik\u2019s key assignment was to operate the shuttle\u2019s robotic arm. The crew was the first in U.S. history to include two females \u2014 the other being Christa McAuliffe, a teacher in New Hampshire who was the first non-astronaut sent into space. McAuliffe\u2019s selection engendered additional excitement for the mission, and she planned to conduct science lessons from space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the launch turned into disaster due to a defect in the seal of the solid rocket booster. Examination of the debris also determined that either Resnik or Ellison Onizuka activated the emergency air packs of three of their comrades sitting in the forward seats, meaning that Onizuka or Resnik or both survived the initial blast before the spaceship crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The astronauts\u2019 remains were buried in a common grave beneath a <em>Challenger<\/em> memorial at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At her funeral at Temple Israel of Akron, Gary Rosen served as a panelist on a local television station\u2019s coverage. Bush awarded the <em>Challenger<\/em> crewmembers, posthumously, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/history\/congressional-space-medal-of-honor\/\">Congressional Space Medal of Honor<\/a>, which goes to \u201cany astronaut who in the performance of his or her duties has distinguished himself or herself by exceptionally meritorious efforts and contributions to the welfare of the Nation and mankind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous other tributes to Resnik and her colleagues were initiated shortly after the disaster, and the effects endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firestone was renamed the Judith A. Resnik Community Learning Center, one of several schools across the country memorializing her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a girl in New Jersey, Jessica Grapentine became fascinated with space while attending a summer program at the Buehler Challenger &amp; Science Center near her home. It was established by the families of the <em>Challenger<\/em> crew three months after the explosion to interest children in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"412\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith2-NASA-412x600.jpg\" alt=\"Judith2 Nasa\" class=\"wp-image-185760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith2-NASA-412x600.jpg 412w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith2-NASA-206x300.jpg 206w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith2-NASA.jpg 583w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Judith Resnik onboard Space Shuttle <em>Discovery<\/em>, courtesy of NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now 24, Grapentine works at NASA\u2019s Texas headquarters. Fittingly, her job as a biomedical flight controller is to keep astronauts safe and healthy in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview last year with the Challenger Center, Grapentine explained the summer program\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy time there helped me realize my passion for space,\u201d Grapentine said. \u201cIt was a crucial step in my pursuit of this passion as a full-time career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Challenger Center consists of 33 facilities across the United States that provide immersive experiences for middle schoolers, including working in teams to solve scientific challenges. Each location\u2019s walls feature quotations from the<em> Challenger<\/em> seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center has reached 6.5 million students since its founding, said communications director Julia Austin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the 40-year commemoration, the center will honor the <em>Challenger<\/em> crew with a digital time capsule consisting of students\u2019 expectations of how space travel will look four decades hence, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"913\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith-NASA-913x600.jpg\" alt=\"Judith Nasa\" class=\"wp-image-185763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith-NASA-913x600.jpg 913w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith-NASA-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith-NASA-768x505.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Judith-NASA.jpg 922w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 913px) 100vw, 913px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Judith Resnik onboard Space Shuttle <em>Discovery,<\/em> courtesy of NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Akron, a scholarship in Resnik\u2019s name was launched soon after her death.
