Worshippers repeatedly glanced at their watches to gauge how soon they could race home to break the 25-hour fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the man leading the service, Shlomo Carlebach, \u201cwas in a trance\u201d of sorts, Ari Goldman remembered, and ignited attendees in spirited singing that kept the solemn day going as people chanted and hugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was the kind of experience I never had before. It took you out of your body and out of your needs. His goal was to reach Jews across the globe, especially those young and unaffiliated, and connect with their souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as The Singing Rabbi, he crafted simple tunes for equally basic, and exceedingly brief, lyrics often taken from Jewish texts. He would accompany them by strumming a &nbsp;classical guitar. His songs not only caught on and spread, but did so across multiple denominations of Judaism, quickly becoming standard fare at weddings and bnei mitzvah celebrations. Thirty-one years after Carlebach\u2019s passing, they remain so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of <em>Od Yishama B\u2019arei Yehuda<\/em> (\u201cIt Will be Heard Again in the Cities of Judea\u201d), the quick-paced, joyously rising song emitted by a clapping circle of loved ones dancing the groom toward the bride to begin a wedding ceremony. <em>Am Yisrael Chai<\/em> (\u201cThe Jewish People Live\u201d). <em>Eilekha Hashem Ekra<\/em> (\u201cI\u2019ll Call Upon You, God\u201d). <em>Bilvavi Mishkan Evneh<\/em> (\u201cI\u2019ll Build a Tabernacle in My Heart\u201d) <em>Hashmi\u2019eini Et Koleikh<\/em> (\u201cLet Me Hear Your Voice\u201d). The musical legacy is un-freaking-believable,\u201d said Solomon, who as a boy in Queens, New York, learned to play Jewish songs on accordion without knowing they were Carlebach\u2019s creations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe&#8217;s kind of the soundtrack,\u201d said Shaul Magid, a Harvard professor of modern Jewish studies. \u201cCertainly, in post-war Jewish America, he\u2019s one of the two or three most important personalities in terms of influence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Goldman, Carlebach\u2019s songs were \u201cvery formative music\u201d that he\u2019d dance to in his family\u2019s living room in New York. Goldman attended Carlebach\u2019s synagogue as a teenager and became \u201calmost like a roadie,\u201d hauling Carlebach\u2019s guitar into and out of taxis they\u2019d take to concerts. \u201cI could not be in his circle enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlebach continues to influence Jewish life and prayers. He came from a family of rabbis and became one himself, taking over the Manhattan synagogue after his father\u2019s death and establishing his own in San Francisco in the mid-1960s that he named the House of Love and Prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had a talent for music, wrote songs and performed in Manhattan nightclubs. He soon combined his passions, melding Hasidic-influenced spirituality into music to connect with Jewish concertgoers. Oh, he\u2019s a sexual predator,\u2019\u201d Mendes, who grew up a few blocks from the Carlebach synagogue and was a child when Carlebach died, said of previous films. \u201cI think it\u2019s important to be honest and to hold both realities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shlomo Katz is another person too young to appreciate Carlebach at the latter\u2019s peak. He did attend one performance when Carlebach came to Katz\u2019s native Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katz, a musician and the rabbi of a congregation in the Israeli town of Efrat, has spent decades collecting videos and audios of Carlebach\u2019s concerts. Within minutes, Carlebach invited Lloyd to appear with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe asked me what kind of music I played. I said, \u2018The blues.\u2019 He said, \u2018I play the Jewish blues. You play your blues, and I\u2019ll play mine,\u2019\u201d Lloyd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was mesmerized from that first concert. I didn\u2019t know I\u2019d meet this influential Jewish guru. He blew me away. I realized Jewish music was very deep. His music was very deep and moving. At lunch the day after the concert, he told Carlebach he was considering another trip to Israel. Their conversation spurred Lloyd to decide to study religious texts, so Carlebach arranged for the head of a Jerusalem yeshiva to host Lloyd. In August 1994, Lloyd arrived to begin his studies. Carlebach died that October before they could meet again. Lloyd still lives in Israel, in Beit Shemesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month, Lloyd performed at Carlebach\u2019s moshav, much of which burned down in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlebach had told Lloyd:
