{"id":180998,"date":"2025-09-25T14:42:53","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T11:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/?p=180998"},"modified":"2025-09-29T10:12:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T07:12:07","slug":"george_gershwin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/en\/george_gershwin\/","title":{"rendered":"George Gershwin: A Jewish Voice in the American Soundscape"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For Israeli pianist Guy Mintus, performing <em>Rhapsody in Blue<\/em> in Landsberg, Germany, in 2018 for descendants of Shoah survivors remains memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because Leonard Bernstein had 70 years earlier conducted a concert for Shoah survivors at a displaced-persons camp in Landsberg, and the program included the same George Gershwin composition.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"568\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Raphsody-in-Blue.jpg\" alt=\"Raphsody In Blue\" class=\"wp-image-181005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Raphsody-in-Blue.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Raphsody-in-Blue-300x284.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Rhapsody in Blue<\/em> by George Gerswhin, Leonard Bernstein at the piano and conducting the Columbia Syphony Orchestra, CBS Records<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was a pretty special moment,\u201d Mintus said. \u201cIt closes the loop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With its blend of classical and jazz elements, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/search?projectName=NLI#&amp;q=any,contains,Rhapsody%20in%20Blue&amp;bulkSize=30&amp;index=0&amp;sort=rank&amp;t=allresults&amp;mode=basic\">Rhapsody in Blue<\/a><\/em> was experimental when Gershwin wrote and first performed it in early 1924 \u2014 and became a monumental smash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece\u2019s eclectic nature might be said to represent Gershwin\u2019s career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider that in November of that year, he was performing as a piano soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. While in the city, he observed rehearsals of <em>Lady, Be Good!<\/em>, a musical Gershwin and his brother and fellow composer-collaborator Ira scored, prior to its heading to Broadway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philadelphia schedule illustrated Gershwin\u2019s \u201cblurring of the boundary\u201d between the classical and jazz genres, said William Everett, a retired music professor at the University of Missouri \u2013 Kansas City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s a really concise version of why Gershwin mattered, it\u2019s because he did that repeatedly,\u201d said Everett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was \u201ca crossover artist,\u201d said Howard Pollack, author of a 2006 biography of Gershwin.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"397\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Gershwin-Pollack-Book-397x600.jpg\" alt=\"Gershwin Pollack Book\" class=\"wp-image-181008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Gershwin-Pollack-Book-397x600.jpg 397w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Gershwin-Pollack-Book-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Gershwin-Pollack-Book.jpg 513w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/books\/NNL_ALEPH997010718706105171\/NLI\">George Gershwin &#8211; His Life and Work<\/a><\/em> by Howard Pollack, Berkeley: University of California Press, 2006. From the National Library of Israel collections<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The man behind <em>Rhapsody in Blue<\/em> would compose the classical <em>Piano Concerto in F<\/em> the next year; 2025 is the concerto\u2019s centennial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any discussion of 20th-century U.S. music must include Gershwin, who composed the music for multiple Broadway shows, wrote one of the greatest American operas in<em> Porgy and Bess<\/em> and moved from his native Manhattan across the country to compose for Hollywood movies at the dawn of \u201ctalkies,\u201d the film industry\u2019s synchronization of moving images with music and sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of Gershwin\u2019s most important contributions is he straddled the line between concert-hall music and the world of popular music. He showed how these two realms \u2014 art and commercially popular music \u2014 were really not that far from each other,\u201d Everett said. \u201cGershwin eradicated that barrier in so many ways. Gershwin is someone whose music you can hear played by dance bands as well as by symphony orchestras. He never married and died childless, but his siblings\u2019 descendants manage the Gershwin brothers\u2019 estate today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George\u2019s compositions attracted an impressive following at the highest levels. \u201cSwanee\u201d became a hit when Al Jolson recorded it. Gershwin wrote the song <em>as a teenager<\/em>. \u201cI Got Rhythm,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve Got a Crush on You\u201d and \u201cSomeone to Watch Over Me\u201d were songs he penned for Broadway shows in the 1920s that became classics, with such vocal legends as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Linda Ronstadt recording them separately decades later. Gershwin\u2019s <em>An American in Paris<\/em>, an orchestral work that premiered at New York\u2019s Carnegie Hall in 1928, remains one of the most popular compositions in American music. So does <em>Rhapsody in Blue<\/em>, excerpts of which continue as staples of United Airlines\u2019 television commercials. Woody Allen\u2019s 1979 film <em>Manhattan <\/em>opens to montages of the city set to <em>Rhapsody<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Rhapsody in Blue<\/em> also was the title of a 1945 film about Gershwin, while a 1951 Gene Kelly film, <em>An American in Paris<\/em>, was inspired by that work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to <em>Lady, Be Good!<\/em>: Gershwin wrote it for another dancing great, Fred Astaire, and Astaire\u2019s sister Adele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gershwin is \u201cstill a presence in the jazz world, the popular-music world. You can listen to the 2001 album <em>Moroccan Moods of Gershwin<\/em> by Liz Magnes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/items\/NNL_MUSIC_AL990025850270205171\/NLI\">on the National Library of Israel website<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Gershwin\u2019s parents hosted actors working in Manhattan\u2019s lively Yiddish theater scene, and young George would play piano and sing Yiddish songs for them, Pollack said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo write good music, one must have feeling. This quality is possessed to a great degree by the Jewish people. Perhaps the fact that through the centuries the Jews have been an oppressed race has helped to intensify this feeling. As a result, we have had many great Jewish composers,\u201d Pollack\u2019s biography, <em>George Gershwin: His Life and Work<\/em>, quoted him as saying. He also wrote that Gershwin stated, \u201cWhile I actually do not know much about Jewish folksong, I think that many of my themes are Jewish in feeling, although they are purely American in style.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mintus\u2019s style is partly Gershwinian. His 2020 album <em>A Gershwin Playground<\/em> is comprised of his trio band\u2019s interpretations of nine Gershwin compositions. And Mintus\u2019s orchestral work <em>Rhapsody on My Mind<\/em>, he said, is \u201can evolution\u201d of the Gershwin classic, one that he renews and improvises with each playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs I grow, I discover new things.
