Lansky would make his mark in gambling, pairing with Italian Mafia leaders and another infamous Jewish gangster, Benjamin \u201cBugsy\u201d Siegel. He was a pivotal figure in bringing hotels-casinos to Cuba in the 1950s, a successful venture until the Communist revolution of 1959 seized his operations.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"347\" height=\"417\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gangster.jpg\" alt=\"Gangster\" class=\"wp-image-178245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gangster.jpg 347w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gangster-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/amjwld\/1972\/01\/21\/01\/article\/14\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7CtxTI--------------1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">January 21, 1972, <em>The American Jewish World<\/em>,<\/a> the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Lansky was arrested several times in the United States by federal and local authorities, but was convicted and imprisoned only once, in New York, on a gambling-related violation. Concerned that he could be charged in a money-skimming and tax-evasion scheme involving Las Vegas\u2019s Flamingo Hotel, Lansky and his second wife Thelma, known as Teddy, traveled to Israel in July 1970 from their home in Miami Beach, Florida. They intended to settle down in the Jewish state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They stayed in hotels and rented apartments in the Tel Aviv area. Lansky frequently would walk Bruzzer, the <em>shih tzu<\/em> he and Teddy brought over from Florida. He\u2019d meet and speak with Israelis, who often had no idea who he was. Paparazzi eventually stalked him.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"455\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mug2-455x600.jpg\" alt=\"Mug2\" class=\"wp-image-178239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mug2-455x600.jpg 455w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mug2-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/mug2.jpg 566w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 455px) 100vw, 455px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/amjwld\/1972\/01\/21\/01\/article\/14\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7CtxTI--------------1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">October 14, 1971, <em>The Australian Jewish Times<\/em>,<\/a> the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The couple had come on three-month tourist visas, which they renewed in Israel. In December 1970, they applied for citizenship under the Law of Return, which grants Diaspora Jews the right to settle in Israel. The documents Lansky submitted to Interior Minister Yosef Burg stated that he was born Jewish, always considered himself Jewish, was a member of a Florida synagogue and over the years supported Israel. He attached letters of recommendation from Jewish Floridians \u2014 character witnesses, as it were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his unique way, Lansky projected Jewish pride. In New York in the 1930s, his henchmen reputedly broke up meetings of the pro-Nazi Bund party and attacked attendees, and in 1948 he procured weapons to be shipped to Israel during the War of Independence and bribed dockworkers to sabotage private arms shipments to Arab armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to spend the rest of my days in Israel,\u201d stated an excerpt of Lansky\u2019s application published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/books\/NNL_ALEPH990011873450205171\/NLI\">Little Man: Meyer Lansky and the Gangster Life<\/a><\/em>, a biography written by Robert Lacey and published in 1991. \u201cI have no criminal past which is likely to cause a breach of the peace and I am not now likely to endanger the peace in any country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/littlebigman-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"Littlebigman\" class=\"wp-image-178221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/littlebigman-800x600.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/littlebigman-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/littlebigman-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/littlebigman-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/littlebigman.jpeg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Little Man: Meyer Lansky and the Gangster Life<\/em>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/books\/NNL_ALEPH990011873450205171\/NLI\">book<\/a> by Robert Lacey, London: Century, 1991<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Burg didn\u2019t see it that way and refused Lansky\u2019s application, citing the Law of Return\u2019s allowing exceptions for applicants likely to undermine public order. On Sept. 21, 1971, Burg had ceased renewing Lansky\u2019s visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States did not seek Lansky\u2019s extradition because, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/cgs\/1972\/09\/28\/01\/article\/7\/?srpos=46&amp;e=-------en-20--41--img-txIN%7ctxTI-meyer+lansky-------------1\">the State Department\u2019s spokesman explained at the time<\/a>, his offense was not covered by a relevant Israeli-U.S. treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"587\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2weeks.jpg\" alt=\"2weeks\" class=\"wp-image-178233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2weeks.jpg 587w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2weeks-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2weeks-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/amjwld\/1972\/11\/03\/01\/article\/57\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7CtxTI--------------1\">November 3, 1972, <em>The American Jewish World<\/em><\/a>, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Lansky sued Burg, and the case reached Israel\u2019s Supreme Court, which ruled against the retired gangster on September 11, 1972. The court concluded that Burg was justified in basing his denial, in part, on the findings of a U.S. congressional committee\u2019s 1950-51 investigation into organized crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lansky \u201chad operated within the framework of organized crime in the United States and had been closely associated with it,\u201d Burg determined, as quoted in Lacey\u2019s book, and Israel\u2019s court ruled that Burg\u2019s conclusion \u201ccould not be said to be unreasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ver2-970x487.jpg\" alt=\"Ver2\" class=\"wp-image-178236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ver2-970x487.jpg 970w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ver2-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ver2-768x386.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ver2.jpg 1350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/austjewishtimes\/1972\/02\/10\/01\/article\/43\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7CtxTI--------------1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">February 10, 1972, <em>The Australian Jewish Times<\/em>,<\/a> the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In November, Lansky left Israel, never to return. The State Department had revoked his passport (Lansky refused to surrender it at the U.S. embassy), and Israel provided a travel document enabling him to leave the country; his wife stayed behind, temporarily, in Israel. Lansky was arrested by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents on contempt-of-court charges upon landing in Miami. A subsequent trial found him innocent. Lansky died in Florida in 1982 at age 80.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rockaway is asked how Lansky and his Jewish underworld colleagues, most prominently Abner \u201cLongie\u201d Zwillman and Siegel, might have handled today\u2019s anti-Israel agitators\u2019 harassing and attacking of Jews on America\u2019s college campuses and streets in the aftermath of Hamas\u2019s Oct. 7, 2023, massacre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf he were in his 40s, he would be active against them,\u201d Rockaway said, speaking of Lansky.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rockaway harked back to the Jewish gangsters\u2019 attacks on Nazi sympathizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They saw themselves, he said, \u201cas defending the Jewish people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Writer-editor Hillel Kuttler can be reached at <\/em><a
