The Arrival of the Moss Haggadah"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of Passover\u2019s central themes is that participants at the Seder, the interactive experience at Jewish families\u2019 dinner tables that opens the annual holiday, should internalize the ancient Israelites\u2019 exodus by seeing themselves, even millennia later, as personally having been liberated from slavery in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artist David Moss took the Hebrew word <em>lir\u2019ot<\/em>, to see, to heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Haggadah he began working on in 1980, Moss presented that theme across two facing pages. As the pages begin to be opened, the portraits of six Jews on each of three rows \u2014 garbed in the clothing of various historical periods \u2014 reflect off shiny surfaces on the facing pages, as if all 18 people are looking into mirrors. A Sotheby listing remarked that each page \u201cmakes a visual and intellectual statement that surprises, delights and educates the viewer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A native of Dayton, Ohio, in the midwestern region of the United States, Moss was living in San Francisco when he decided to begin working on the project. He had wanted to move to Israel and his late wife, Rosalyn, suggested doing so in stages. The Haggadah project proved to be a key spur in their journey to settling in the Jewish state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before sharpening a pencil or mixing paint, Moss conducted six months of research on Haggadot, including at the NLI and at the British Library, in London. He studied the history of the Haggadah text\u2019s development, traditional commentaries on the book and the art history of&nbsp;Haggadah manuscripts.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"405\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Or-leHametz-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions-405x600.jpg\" alt=\"Moss Haggadah Or Lehametz 600px \u00a92024 David Moss Courtesy Bet Alpha Editions\" class=\"wp-image-172193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Or-leHametz-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions-405x600.jpg 405w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Or-leHametz-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Or-leHametz-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Moss Haggadah &#8211; Or leHametz \u00a92024 David Moss Courtesy Bet Alpha Editions<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Moss first worked on the artistic side of the project in Jerusalem and said he hoped from the beginning that it would make its way back to Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI began the Haggadah in Jerusalem, knowing well that it would be sent into the Diaspora, but even over 40 years ago I had a strong desire that somehow, sometime, my manuscript would return to Jerusalem,\u201d Moss, who has lived in Israel\u2019s capital since 1983, said in a video conversation from his studio in the Hutzot HaYotzer artists quarter outside the Old City\u2019s walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo of course it was an unimaginable thrill to actually witness the return of the Haggadah back to Jerusalem literally as I predicted 40 years ago \u2026 to my city, to Jerusalem.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the commission, Moss was enjoying a career as an artist specializing in designing <em>Ketubot<\/em> and penning the traditional Jewish wedding contract\u2019s calligraphy in Aramaic. He landed the Haggadah commission just as he sought a longer-term project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Levys extended artistic latitude, requiring only that the Haggadah be in large format (its dimensions are 18 x 11\u00bd inches: 458 x 292 mm), be on animal parchment and be in traditional style \u2014 the last parameter representing a shift for Moss, whose work tended to be \u201cquite modern and graphic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI basically wanted to allow the text itself to reveal new insights, unique ways of approaching the text,&nbsp;fresh insights that had never been done before,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"405\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Psalm-128.3-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions-405x600.jpg\" alt=\"Moss Haggadah Psalm 128.3 600px \u00a92024 David Moss Courtesy Bet Alpha Editions\" class=\"wp-image-172199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Psalm-128.3-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions-405x600.jpg 405w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Psalm-128.3-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Moss-Haggadah-Psalm-128.3-600px-\u00a92024-David-Moss-Courtesy-Bet-Alpha-Editions.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Moss Haggadah &#8211; Psalm 128.3 \u00a92024 David Moss Courtesy Bet Alpha Editions<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Moss utilized gold leaf and various artistic techniques throughout the work \u2014 not, he explained, to experiment or to extend his range, but as \u201cthe perfect way to express\u201d his understanding of the relevant text in the Haggadah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a few exceptions, such as the aforementioned mirrors, Moss\u2019s approach was: \u201cIdea determines technique,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI used papercuts when they expressed&nbsp;the concepts I wanted to convey,\u201d Moss said, citing his employing the technique on both sides of one page to convey the multiple concepts conveyed by the Hebrew root <em>avd<\/em> to mean slavery, work, idolatry and worshipping God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe silhouettes are identical, but the first side of the page shows the slavery in Egypt. When turned, the same cut-out silhouettes show the baking of the matzah: divine service,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Replicas of the Haggadah have been produced, and Moss teaches from it in presentations to groups and individuals throughout the year.&nbsp;But Moss said he never uses his own Haggadah at Seders he hosts, which typically extend past 3:00 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He will celebrate this Passover at Camp Ramah in California, where he will be a scholar in residence. At Moss\u2019s Seder will be his sister, his daughter, her husband and their three children.
