One of these books has a most incredible survival story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the middle of the 13th century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/manuscripts\/NNL_ALEPH000042450\/NLI\">an extraordinary manuscript<\/a> was scribed and illustrated in Catalonia, Spain. This manuscript was shipped out of Spain along with the expelled Jews, travelling to Italy, then Salonica (which was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time), until it moved over to Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/299090977346058\/\">Join our group to learn more about Jewish life in Europe: <\/a>:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"fb-group\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/299090977346058\/\/\" data-width=\"280\" data-show-social-context=\"true\" data-show-metadata=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the Second World War broke out, the manuscript was smuggled to the United States by Alexander Guttmann &#8211; a Jewish scholar &#8211; who recieved his visa in 1940. He carried the Mahzor over the borders at great personal risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-475 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mahzor3_765x400.jpg\" width=\"765\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mahzor3_765x400.jpg 765w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/mahzor3_765x400-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beyond the great story behind the manuscript, the illuminated content illustrates the uniqueness of the Jewish communities before the edict of expulsion\u00a0from Spain. It is a Mahzor for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur for use\u00a0by a cantor. It is an entirely Jewish creation: Poems written by some of the greatest poets in\u00a0Jewish history and it is singular in being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/manuscripts\/NNL_ALEPH000042450\/NLI#$FL10352156\">the only Mahzor decorated with micrography<\/a> &#8211; a Jewish art form in which tiny lettering creates decorative geometric shapes. This art appears almost exclusively in bibles and so the use of intricate and breathtaking micrography in a prayer book\u00a0is considered extremely
