After all, even in today\u2019s congregations, where prayers sometimes are led by cantors and intoned by worshippers in the native land\u2019s tongue \u2014 such as French in Reform synagogues in France or English in the United States \u2014 it\u2019s inconceivable that Torah scrolls are not written or chanted in Hebrew. The first words of each, <em>Bendito tu ANDR<\/em>, meaning, \u201cBlessed are You, our God, king of the universe,\u201d is a standard opening for Jewish prayers. NLI\u2019s collection includes one such first edition. It was a parallel phenomenon in the translations of both the siddur and Tanach [Bible],\u201d Moreno said. Nor is she sure how it was used. \u201cIn a synagogue? In a home? Was it never read?
