{"id":148578,"date":"2024-02-11T13:48:15","date_gmt":"2024-02-11T11:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/?p=148578"},"modified":"2024-02-14T10:15:11","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T08:15:11","slug":"trip-to-the-galilee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/en\/trip-to-the-galilee\/","title":{"rendered":"Memories From 1947: A Trip to the Galilee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2023, in the run-up to Israel\u2019s 75<sup>th<\/sup> Independence Day, the National Library launched a project to collect personal diaries from the 1948 period, with the aim of creating a unique historical collection of testimonies from the nation\u2019s founding generation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/at-your-service\/who-we-are\/projects\/personal-diaries\">Operation Diary<\/a>\u201d succeeded beyond all expectations with some 90 personal records submitted and incorporated into the Library\u2019s archives. Among these was a small booklet from 1947, written and illustrated by 21-year-old <em>sabra <\/em>Avraham Dubno for his younger sister Shulamith, about their trek through the Galilee. It is a reimagining of a life and that particular trip to the Galilee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a id=\"_msocom_4\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComing to the Sea of Galilee was a genius idea,\u201d Shula shouts over the rumble of the truck\u2019s diesel engine. Avraham laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was my idea, right?\u201d he shouts back. She tosses an orange in his direction. Peeling it, he hands her half. She bites into the warm citrus, relishing the sweet juice as it soothes her parched throat. After twenty minutes, Avraham bangs on the side of the truck. The driver stops, and they jump off the back. They cut through an olive grove to reach the lakeshore. Fresh water glistens in the sunlight, and Shula catches her breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s lovely,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI told you,\u201d Avraham replies as he plops his pack down on a patch of grass. \u201cThis is the spot where we used to come when I was stationed in Tel Amal.\u201d He takes off his shoes and socks. \u201cThe trick is,\u201d he continues, starting toward the rocky shore, \u201cyou have to run as fast as you can.\u201d He bolts for the shoreline. Shula laughs as he runs into the water yelling like Johnny Weissmuller\u2019s Tarzan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shula takes her time. She lays out her towel, folds her clothes, and tucks them in her pack. She ties her hair up with her kerchief. Two girls about her age sit off to the side, staring at Avraham and giggling. Her brother always attracts that kind of attention, especially when he shows off. He spits out a stream of water as he floats on his back. Shula steps towards the water. Rocks jut into the underside of her feet, making each step hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAvraham! The rocks are cutting me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI told you. Ouch! What a stupid idea! I\u2019d much rather deal with the crowds at the beach in Tel Aviv than walk over these godforsaken things,\u201d she complains. The girls laugh. She calculates it will take her eight strides to get into the lake. \u201cWatch out! Here I come!\u201d she yells, leaping toward the shimmering water. She dives in headfirst, cleaning the day\u2019s grime from her skin. She flips onto her back and looks up at the blue sky. Fresh water feels so different from the sea water she is used to. Cleaner, clearer. No wonder Jesus washed here. She swims over to Avraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI take it back. Whoever thought of this idea was a genius,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd who would that be?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou,\u201d she replies. He smiles, glancing over at the girls on the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m getting out,\u201d he says. \u201cYou coming?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She shakes her head. \u201cNo, I\u2019m going for a swim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On shore, her brother grabs his towel and dries off. He waves at the girls who, of course, wave back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere are you from?\u201d one of the girls asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTel Aviv,\u201d he replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOooh! A Tel Avivi,\u201d she teases. \u201cAnd your girlfriend? Is she from Tel Aviv, too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my sister, not my girlfriend,\u201d he tells them. The two girls look at each other and giggle. Shula has seen enough. She swims away as Avraham sits with the girls. She knows that one day he will get married and have children of his own. That one day she will become Doda Shula and not be his best friend. It will come, and that is fine.
