Again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dozens of residents of the moshav, an agricultural settlement mixing private and public ownership of property, were murdered in the Hamas surprise attack of October 7. Netiv Ha&#8217;Asarah was evacuated of all its residents along with other border region communities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the images of horror and the hellish testimonies, will the residents of the moshav return to their homes? Will they succeed in rebuilding this community located just a few feet away from the Gaza Strip?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is not the first time that the people of Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah have been evacuated from their homes. But the last time this happened, it was a peace treaty rather than a war that forced them out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah was established as an agricultural moshav in 1973 in the Yamit region of northern Sinai. The Sinai Peninsula was one of the territories captured by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967. At first, the community was called Minyan [lit. &#8220;prayer quorum&#8221;], but pressure from residents ultimately led to it being renamed Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah [lit. &#8220;path of the ten&#8221;], after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/ajnm\/1971\/07\/23\/01\/article\/7\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">ten soldiers killed<\/a> in a Yas&#8217;ur helicopter crash in 1971.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143161\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143161\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-143161 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv6july1973-660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv6july1973-660.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv6july1973-660-300x99.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201c<em>Minyan \u2013 A New Settlement at the Entrance to Rafah<\/em>\u201d Report on the founding of Minyan, later Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/mar\/1973\/07\/06\/01\/article\/102\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">Maari<\/a>v<\/em>, July 6, 1973, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At its peak, some 150 residents lived in the Sinai moshav, primarily engaged in agriculture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cEverything there was open, everything was spacious,\u201d said Eshel Margalit, one of the founders. \u201cBeaches that were something amazing, and the greenery of the palm trees \u2026 an exceptional landscape. In short, heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe were strongly encouraged to join the settlement,\u201d said Aviva Fuld. \u201cI came for ideological reasons. I grew up in the Beitar movement which settled the country. I saw it as [ideological] fulfillment, we were seen as pioneers. I liked it very much. My husband was very tied to the land and to agriculture, we grew flowers, beautiful chrysanthemums, roses, vegetables. We were very successful in agriculture. Later on, I worked in the kindergarten as a kindergarten teacher. Many of my friends from the Nachal [an IDF program that combined military service with agriculture and community-building] were there. Photo: Herman Chanania, Government Press Office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Fall<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This idyllic existence was suddenly cut short, however, when a peace treaty signed with Egypt stipulated that Israel must withdraw from the entire Sinai Peninsula. The meaning for Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah was clear \u2013 the end of their settlement of Sinai and the evacuation of the moshav.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the month of April, 1982, the residents officially said goodbye. They packed up their things and their families and left Sinai.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult story,\u201d Hagai Shaked, a resident, recalled. \u201cAfter nine years, we realized what was happening when Sadat came to Israel, we knew it would happen. The majority chose to stay and so did we\u2026 Most of the residents didn\u2019t see the destruction itself. People went through trauma. We were all together. We all went through the evacuation. This trauma is something that binds. It\u2019s glue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere was very, very serious trauma,\u201d Shimon Sahar concurred. \u201cTo see the bulldozers with the wrecking ball that destroys the house. The trailers packing up all the equipment and the demolished home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Rebuilding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But at least in this case, the evacuation didn\u2019t come as a surprise, even if it came as a shock. The warming relations with Egypt, even before the peace treaty, were a very big hint for the Israelis in Sinai. Already in the years prior to the evacuation, residents of Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah worked on finding on alternative location. The place they chose was in the northwestern Negev, right on the border with Gaza.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the evacuation from Sinai, the residents moved to a temporary residence in a holiday resort in Ashkelon, since work was still needed to lay the foundations in the new location.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143307\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143307\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-143307\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/997009326583805171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/997009326583805171.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/997009326583805171-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah\u2019s new location in the western Negev, May 1982. The Meitar Collection, the Pritzker Family National Photography Collection, the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some decided to resettle in other places, but many of the residents of Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah wanted to continue the sense of \u201ctogetherness\u201d they had in a new location. They wanted to reestablish the spirit of community, of pioneering, in a new home. \u201cWe came to [neighboring] Kibbutz Zikim, we walked around, we went up a hill and looked out at the sands of Zikim,\u201d Shoshana Ta\u2019aseh would later recall. \u201cWhat a nice place here! The view is nice! The air is good! Here, this is what we want! And right next to the sea, close to family, to the city, I said &#8211; this is great, I like this place!&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143310\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-143310 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv22oct1982.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv22oct1982.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv22oct1982-300x114.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201c<em>The future will prove whether the price we paid in the evacuation of the Yamit region was justified [\u2026] the future of this land is in the hands of those who grasp it.<\/em>\u201d \u2013 Amos Hadar, secretary of the Moshavim movement, is quoted in this report on the reestablishment of Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah. <em>Maariv,<\/em> October 22, 1982, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And indeed, Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah arose anew and flourished. Many of the residents worked and still work in agriculture as well as domestic tourism. The moshav was even expanded in the 1990s to make room for the next generation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And why specifically on the Gaza border?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe made a very good decision,\u201d recalled Ovadiah Keidar. \u201cWe decided that we have to fulfill our Zionist mission and settle here up to the border with the Gaza Strip. There was a euphoric atmosphere due to the notion that peace with the Palestinians was just around the corner. And indeed, in the beginning, we worked in tandem with the Palestinians. There were no borders, and no gates and no walls. Can Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah rise again?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We returned to Aviva Fuld. Two weeks after the massacre of October 7. She, her family, and many of her friends from Netiv Ha\u2019Asarah are presently in a Tel Aviv hotel. She and her family were saved, but many of her friends are no longer among the living. \u201cThe old timers will return,\u201d she says with pain. \u201cRegarding the youth, it\u2019s too early to tell. For us, we don\u2019t have many options. We paid with our lives, with our bodies. But this is our country and we have nowhere to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But Fuld says the young residents and maybe even the old timers will not agree to go back without a fundamental change. They have a clear condition: The future cannot be anything like the past. After the fighting is done, Hamas cannot continue to exist.
