This man, the son of Vietnamese parents, received this name simply because he was born here in the State of Israel, in the town of Ofakim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s difficult to imagine what he might be going through during these difficult days. Has he heard of the bloody events of October 7? Does he know of the terrible massacre that was carried out in his place of birth, the place for which he is named? We may never know.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142847\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142847\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-142847\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alhamishmar8sep1977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alhamishmar8sep1977.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/alhamishmar8sep1977-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142847\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201c<em>Ofek \u2013 A Vietnamese Sabra From Ofakim<\/em>\u201d, a headline in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/ahr\/1977\/09\/08\/01\/article\/58\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">Al HaMishmar,<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/ahr\/1977\/09\/08\/01\/article\/58\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\"> September 8, 1977<\/a>, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But let\u2019s start at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Opposite the shores of Vietnam, a fishing boat containing 66 men, women, and children fleeing the horrors of war in their country, found itself adrift in the South China Sea. An Israeli freighter, the Yoveli, noticed the rickety vessel. Its captain, Amnon Tadmor, decided to take all the refugees onto his ship, saving 30 men, 16 women, and 20 children, all of them exhausted after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/indianajpost\/1977\/09\/09\/01\/page\/45\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">experiencing such an ordeal<\/a>. It turned out that their engine had broken down, leaving them stranded at sea for four days without food or water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142850\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142850\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-142850 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/davar12june1977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/davar12june1977.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/davar12june1977-300x260.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142850\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201c<em>Israeli Ship Gathers Vietnamese Refugees and Seeks Shelter for Them<\/em>\u201d, a headline in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/dav\/1977\/06\/12\/01\/article\/4\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">Davar,<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/dav\/1977\/06\/12\/01\/article\/4\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\"> June 12, 1977<\/a>, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All that remained was finding them a home. Taiwan, Captain Tadmor\u2019s original destination, said &#8220;No.&#8221; Japan and Hong Kong also refused. Even the Israeli Foreign Ministry initially replied that bringing the refugees to Israel was \u201cimpractical and out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142856\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142856\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-142856 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv17june1977.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv17june1977.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/maariv17june1977-300x260.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142856\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cNo Country Wants to Absorb the Refugees Rescued by the \u2018Yoveli\u2019\u201d, a headline in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/mar\/1977\/06\/17\/01\/article\/36\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\"><em>Maariv<\/em>, June 17, 1977<\/a>, the Historical Jewish Press Collection at the National Library of Israel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But the story hit the headlines in Israel, and ultimately reached the Knesset, where Knesset Member Yossi Sarid submitted an urgent proposal for the parliamentary agenda, calling on the government to absorb the refugees. The government was changing hands in those days, as shortly before, the Likud party had managed a historic victory in the national elections that brought to an end nearly 30 years of dominance by the Mapai party and its predecessors. They were given warm meals, medical treatment, and were even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/dav\/1977\/06\/28\/01\/article\/21\/?e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">sent to learn Hebrew<\/a> at the local <em>ulpan<\/em> (Hebrew language school). The refugees were also given tours of the area so they could get to know the surroundings and locals a little better. This enabled them to feel more comfortable in their new, temporary home. \u201cThe food and atmosphere and the people here,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/newspapers\/dav\/1977\/07\/01\/01\/article\/140\/?e=-------he-20--1--img-txIN%7ctxTI--------------1\">they were quoted as saying<\/a>, \u201cit\u2019s all very good.\u201d The town and the people of Israel lovingly received these Vietnamese refugees, to the extent that many wanted to adopt the orphaned children among them \u2013 requests which, as far as we have been able to discover, were rejected due to the desire to maintain the refugees as a single homogenous unit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142897\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142897\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-142897\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/D203-119-660.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/D203-119-660.jpg 660w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/D203-119-660-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/D203-119-660-400x600.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142897\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Refugee with a Sabra hat in Israel. Photo: Moshe Milner, Government Press Office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The local council in Ofakim hoped the national and even global interest in the refugees might generate some good press for the town itself. \u201cI want people in the country to know that Ofakim is a \u2018garden city\u2019, dipped in greenery, even though it is in the Negev,\u201d said council head Yechiel Bentov, who hoped that new <em>olim<\/em> (Jewish immigrants) would also come to his town to establish a permanent home for themselves in the south.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And that\u2019s the end of the story. After spending a few months in Israel, the refugees moved on to their next destinations. But there is no doubt that they took the big hearts of the people of Ofakim with them, forever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And Ofek? If you\u2019re reading this, let us know.
