Their letters are largely identical, yet as historical objects some are certainly more interesting and significant than others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Due to their invaluable nature and fragile state, these treasures are very rarely ever removed from the National Library vaults, but \u2013 with the approval and oversight of our experts \u2013 we managed to take a few of them out briefly in order to to give you a glimpse and share their stories!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Yemenite Torah Fragments from 1,000 Years Ago<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These fragments from an approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/manuscripts\/NNL_ALEPH002525338\/NLI#$FL143037830\">1,000 year-old Yemenite Torah scroll<\/a> were found in a bookbinding, for which they were used as raw material long after the scroll was originally written:<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"1,000 Year-Old Yemenite Torah Fragments: National Library of Israel Treasures Revealed\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q2UKNvIHiCw?list=PLwVb3w40WCbzBaKBCoiulqH7ROEk5dfOt\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Rhodes Torah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/en\/rhodes-torah\/\">This Torah scroll<\/a> was used at the Kahal Shalom Synagogue in Rhodes for centuries. The local mufti is said to have hidden it from the Nazis under the pulpit of a local mosque, where it subsequently survived the war, even though the vast majority of the Rhodes Jewish community did not:<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"How Did This 500 Year-Old Torah Survive The Nazis? Hebrew calendar via the peerless collections of the National Library of Israel and the Jewish people worldwide. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The project is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nli.org.il\/en\/at-your-service\/nli-in-europe\">Gesher L\u2019Europa<\/a>, the National Library of Israel\u2019s initiative to connect with people, institutions and communities
