There are probably several hundred bound volumes of this type in the Scholem Collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One such item is a hefty red-bound volume, upon which Scholem embossed in gold letters the title \u201cPamphlets Reincarnation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-113603\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.nli.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-456x600.jpg 456w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-768x1010.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-1168x1536.jpg 1168w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-1558x2048.jpg 1558w, https:\/\/blognli2026.moonsite.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Re-1-scaled.jpg 1947w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The collection includes eight pamphlets and booklets, seven in English and one in German, published between 1894 and 1928 in New York, San Francisco, London and Leipzig. Among the publishing houses, we find the \u201cTheosophical Society\u201d, the \u201cMetaphysical Publishing Company\u201d, and the \u201cLotus Publishing Company\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The titles are in and of themselves a delight to prevue. They include,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cReincarnation: The Hope of the World\u201d by Irving S. Cooper and \u201cThe Doctrine of Rebirth Scientifically Examined\u201d by W. Y. These in fact form the emblem of the Theosophical Society, which features a Star of David, an Egyptian Ankh, an Ouroborous (a serpent swallowing its tail), a Hindu Aum and even a swastika, which of course was an ancient Hindu religious symbol long before the Nazis expropriated it. However, these early tracts, which Scholem collected and bound together, but did not annotate, await further research regarding the surge of interest in the doctrine in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> and early 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Gershom Scholem himself did address the issue of reincarnation in Jewish mysticism in several publications. He penned the entries on \u201cGilgul-Neshamot\u201d in the Encyclopedia Hebraica (1964) as well as the entry on \u201cGilgul\u201d (not \u201creincarnation\u201d) in the Encyclopedia Judaica (1971). He also published \u201cAn Investigation of the Doctrine of Gilgul in 13<sup>th<\/sup> Century Kabbalah\u201d (1945), and \u201cGilgul: The Transmigration of Souls\u201d in his book \u201cOn the Mystical Shape of the Godhead: Basic Concepts in the Kabbalah\u201d (1991, Hebrew original 1976).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One
